Some things to know about this relationship include the following:

The leading cause of tooth decay is a build-up of bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria often comes from high sugar foods and drinks that contain high levels of sugar. This sugar dissolves in the mouth, damaging your teeth in the process and increasing your risk of tooth decay.

Sugary drinks are especially dangerous because they have a very high sugar count. Drinking a large amount of sugar in a short space of time can fast-track the progress of tooth decay. Regular and diet soft drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks, fruit juice, and concentrates are all often also high in acidity, which further increases your risk of tooth decay

The enamel and tissue of teeth are eroded by acid that attacks the outer surface of the tooth. When enamel is weakened or worn, the softer tissue beneath the tooth is also damaged. The result is painful and sensitive teeth and dental cavities.

Over time, long term damage and erosion will affect your dental health. This means that you will be at greater risk of oral and gum disease in the future. Oral disease can have a serious impact on your overall health as well.

Each acid attack lasts for about 20 minutes. Whenever you take another sip of a sugary drink, the acid damage will start over again. The more often you drink sugar-laden drinks, the more risk you will have of developing damage caused by erosion.

The only way to prevent tooth decay and erosion is to avoid sugary drinks and foods as much as possible. If you have to drink soft drinks or similar high sugar beverages, use a straw to reduce the exposure to the sugar and acids. Drink water after each sugary drink to dilute the sugars and rinse your mouth. Use a decent fluoride toothpaste, but wait at least an hour after drinking sugary or acidic beverages to allow your enamel to re-harden. Do not sip on sugary or acidic drinks slowly – this will increase the risk of damage. It is also wise to avoid drinking sugary or acidic beverages just before bed. Instead, stick to water.

Prevention is always better than cure.
